Another year almost here
October 7th will be two years. Two years that she has been gone. I can't say I 'had' a daughter. That seems like such blasphemy. The correct term to me is 'HAVE' a daughter. But she is no longer huggable. I can no longer hear her laughter or her voice. I can't look forward to any more of her accomplishments because there are none. Autumn again, and it's the same smell in the air. The same quirky wind and dampening light. The time of year I have always loved. Now it's also the time of year that I remember the knock on my door. The face that uttered words telling me she was gone. Autumn décor goes up, as does a sense of dread. Macabre song of leaves in the trees. This year also has included the end of my marriage. Though truthfully it ended long ago, it took a long time to realize that there was no light to sustain it. Just angry words and poison. I understand that 100%. I don't share the Christian faith but I feel fairly certain that following Christ in no way means following the/a church.

Now, Part of me really understands this. It is for those reasons above for the most part, that I ran away from Christianity.
However, MANY, MANY Christians are NOT like the ones she is talking about.
It's just that it's the negative image catches the most attention.
I admit that even know, as a member of the Anglican church, I have a hard time calling myself Christian. I can call my self Anglican, I can call myself a Gnostic/Esoteric Christian with Mystical leanings, lol.... but the word Christian seems to hold a lot of unpleasantries.
I am a Christian. A follower of Christ, who always feels the need to add Gnostic or Esoteric in front of that title to avoid confusion with
the 'fundamental' Christian, mother down the street, who is anti-everything, considers herself a Christian also. A GOOD Christian at that. She truly believes that the words in the bible are the inerrant words of God.
Did CHRIST say "Gays are bad"?
No...
Did CHRIST say, "Kill witches"?
Did CHRIST say, "Women must be submissive to their husband"?
We know Christ did not say these things.
My Anglican congregation has some literalists I'm sure, but they also have people that just want to live as Christs. Doing good. Spreading love. Our Priest is a good man, trying to make everything better for everyone all the time. They all call themselves Christians. Anglicans allow gay priests, women priests and have an open communion.
There are Christians all over just living the word of Christ, or trying their best.
In Living Buddha, Living Christ, one can see the very strong similarities between the core esssence of both.

Thich Nhat Hahn seems to know VERY well, the Jesus it is that Christians are SUPPOSED to be following. The one that is like so very many Light and Truth Bearers.
To see the statement from Anne Rice " It's simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I've tried. I've failed.".... I just don't get that really. Why would one TRY to fit into that? Why not instead just do your thing and work to spread the true beauty of Christianity? The Christians she speaks of are not the true Christians and it is sad to see that rather than work to perpetuate what a true Christian is, she just lumped it all in one group and kicked it aside.

Also, yep. My Granny is a Christian in the old sense of the word. She lives her life as Jesus instructed and is a good person in every way.
ReplyDeleteHowever, she is also against homosexuality and believes women should defer to men (so how she spawned my mother, my aunt, my sis and me is beyond me!)
I can respect her so much except for her belief that the bible cannot be questioned. Questioning is human and what keeps us human. Following a book WITHOUT THINKING is not a good thing. Except my Gran calls it faith.
I suspect Anne Rice doesn't want to be called Christian as she doesn't want to be lumped in with the non-thinkers.
Just as I don't want to be called "pagan" in case my friends think I dance around without my knickers on...

ReplyDeleteYes, stating that one is a Pagan has it's own issues, as does stating that one is Wiccan, or any of those things...
Labels are a tough one.
Yes, if I say I'm a Christian, then I worry that people are going to assume I am a narrow-minded, anti everything sort of person.
Yet at the same time, I feel that if I am outspoken about my non-traditional beliefs, and openly call myself Christian, maybe it helps the overall 'cause' just a little bit. Helps to dispel the myth.
That being said, I'm still totally open to invites to Pagan get-togethers and witchy pot-lucks :)
