Coming Home

Daisy, Daisy...

And the countdown begins. :( Friday at two o'clock, my dear friend of 13 years will be passing on. I am so heartbroken. But I guess it's time. I mean... it's never going to feel like the right time. We were told to put her down a few months ago, she has dental issues that would cost thousands and we were discouraged from doing the dental surgery by the vet  because of her age, suspected heart issues and because she also has mobility issues with the stairs, causing her to spend most of her time away from us at the bottom of the stairs. Summer is coming to an end, winter is not a friend to an old, sore dog.  I love you Daisy.

Why I didn't like The Secret

The following is an excerpt taken from the blog of Stuart Davis but sums up very well the issues I had with The Secret: " The Secret takes a truth like The Self is one with the Universe, and then immediately inserts the wrong self; The Ego. Throughout, The Secret conflates ego (the frontal structure, personality) with Self (an unbounded, unlimited reality which transcends but includes all qualities). In doing so it engineers an unabashed Spiritual Narcissism. Ego is God. The vicissitudes of your ego, its preferences, its unresolved cravings, become the vestments in a regressive ritual. See? It's MAGIC. You caste a spell, voila', the Universe responds. Cuz you're God. Why exactly an entity that IS everything would need more is not clear, why a Divine Being that is all powerful would need to appeal to another power is perplexing, but.. To cement this Kosmic Delusion, The Secret hypnotically repeats "The Universe" and "Your thoughts, your feelings&

The First Harvest

Image
Out here on the west coast of Canada it seems as though summer only just got here. It was a slow start with lots of rain and not a lot of heat. So it was strange to realize that the first Harvest Festival was already upon us. From Wikipedia: Lammas is a  Neo-Pagan  holiday, often called  Lughnasadh , celebrating the first harvest and the reaping of grain. It is a  cross-quarter holiday  halfway between the  Summer Solstice ( Litha ) and the  Autumnal Equinox  (Mabon). In the northern hemisphere, Lammas takes place around August 1 with the Sun near the midpoint of  Leo  in the  tropical zodiac , while in the southern hemisphere Lammas is celebrated around February 1 with the Sun near the midpoint of  Aquarius . On the  Wheel of the Year , it is opposite  Imbolc , which is celebrated on February 2 in the northern hemisphere, and late July / early August in the southern hemisphere. There are many different bits attributed to it here and there, but to me it simply signifies Low Autumn

A Christian Speaks on the Faith and Path of Wicca

I have come across this letter in a few places, one being the Covenant of Gaia Wiccan Church in Alberta,  and so I emailed the author to ask for permissions to re-use it and to verify that indeed this isn't just a copy/pasted internet chain letter. Indeed the author emailed me and sent me the most up to date version and said that anyone may use this letter, but keep it in it's full format without editing it in order to preserve the author's message please. Here's the letter: A CHRISTIAN SPEAKS ON THE FAITH AND PATH OF WICCA by James Clement Taylor I am a Christian and not a Wiccan. A Christian is one who has been baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and who has made a personal, free-will decision to commit himself and all his or her life to our Lord and God and Savior, Jesus Christ. Both of these things are true of me. Although I am a Greek Orthodox Christian, in this paper I am not speaking as agent for any church but am, entirely on
